è  THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS & SUSTAINABLE GOALS:

The United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals are the 8 goals set by the 189 UN member states in September. 2000 and agreed try to achieve by the year 2015.

The 8 millennium development goals are:

·     To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

·     To achieve universal primary education

·     To empower woman and promote gender equality

·     To reduce child mortality

·     To promote maternal health

·     To fight malaria, HIV or AIDS and other diseases

·     To ensure environmental sustainability

·     To develop a global partnership for development

vTARGETS OF MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

     Goal 1 targets:

ü To halve the proportion of people whose daily income is less than $1.25.

ü To achieve full and productive employment, as well as decent work for all.

ü To halve the proportion of individuals suffering from hunger in the period between 1990 and 2015.

     Goal 2 target:

ü To ensure that children will be able to complete a full course of primary education by 2015.

     Goal 3 target:

ü To eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education by 2005 and in all levels of Education, by 2015.

     Goal 4 target:

ü To reduce the under- five mortality rate by two thirds in the period between 1990 and 2015.

     Goal 5 targets:

ü To reduce the maternal mortality ratio by 75%.

ü To achieve universal access to reproductive health.

     Goal 6 targets:

ü To halt by 2015 and have started to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS.

ü To achieve universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it by 2010.

ü To have halted by 2015 and started reversal of the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

     Goal 7 targets:

ü To integrate the principles of sustainable development in every nation’s policy and programs. And also reverse the depletion of environmental resources.

ü To reduce biodiversity loss and achieve a substantial reduction in the rate of loss by 2010.

ü To halve by 2015 the proportion of the universal population without sustainable access to clean and safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

ü To achieve substantial improvement in the lives of minimum of 100 million slump dwellers by 2020

     Goal 8 targets:

ü To develop an open predictable rule based non discriminative trading and economic system.

ü To address special needs of the least developed countries, small island developing states and landlocked developing countries.

ü To deal exhaustively with the debt problems of developing nations.

ü To provide access to affordable, essential drugs in the developing countries in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies.

ü To avail benefits of new technologies, especially information and communication in collaboration with the private sector.

v     SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

The sustainable development goals, also known as global goals, are universal agreement to end poverty and all its dimensions and secure world for people and planet. It ensured that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The 17 sustainable development goals and their 169 targets are part of this agenda.

5P’s of sustainable development are:

§  Planet

§  People

§  Prosperity

§  Peace

§  Partnership.

The four major components of sustainable development are (i) Human, (ii) Social, (iii) Economic, (iv) Environment
