Goals of Environmental Education:
UNESCO emphasizes several aims of
environmental education to promote a sustainable future:
· Foster clear awareness of
interdependence between economic, social, political, and ecological aspects in
both urban and rural areas.
· Cultivate concern for the
environment, recognizing its importance for our well-being.
· Provide every person with
opportunities to acquire knowledge, values, attitudes, commitments, and skills
needed to protect and enhance the environment.
· Create new patterns of behavior for
individuals, groups, and society as a whole toward the environment.
· Encourage responsible actions that
contribute to environmental preservation.
· Facilitate the development of
environmental education for sustainable development by linking institutions and
specialists in a network.
· Process and disseminate information
to promote informed decision-making.
Objectives
of environmental education:
A
number of objectives of environmental education have been formulated for both
formal and non-formal education at all levels at the International Conference
of UNESCO [1977] held at Tbilisi, they are
♦
To develop an
awareness of environment and sensitivity to the total environment and its
allied problems.
♦
To help acquiring
knowledge and variety of experiences on the environment and associated
problems.
♦
To develop a
basic understanding of structure, processes and problems of environment,
interdependence of environmental components.
♦
To help in
acquiring skills for identifying and solving environmental problems.
♦
To develop
attitudes, a set of values and feelings of concern for the environment and
encouragement or motivation for active participation in protection and
improvement of environment.
♦
To provide an
opportunity for an active participation or practise at all levels in working
for the solution of environmental problems.
♦
To develop an
ability for evaluating environmental components of educational programmes in
terms of ecological, economic, social, cultural, aesthetic and education
factors.
Need for environmental education:
Environmental
education is an important segment within the educational system. The need for
environmental education is as follows:
· Environmental education raises awareness about global
challenges.
· Cultivates concern for the environment and its impact
on our lives.
· Provides essential knowledge about ecosystems,
biodiversity, and sustainability.
· Fosters understanding of how our actions affect the
planet.
· Equips individuals with practical skills to address
environmental issues.
· Motivates responsible actions for a healthier and more
sustainable world.
· Spending time in nature provides physical and
psychological benefits.
· Environmental education promotes well-being by
connecting us to the outdoors
· A healthy environment is essential for economic
growth.
· Industries, agriculture, and tourism thrive when
ecosystems are intact.
· Our personal and cultural identities are often tied to
the environment around us. Environmental education reinforces this connection.
· We face unprecedented challenges—climate change, species loss, and more. Environmental education equips us to address these threats.
Thus, environmental education serves as a powerful tool for fostering environmental literacy, promoting sustainability, and addressing climate change. It empowers individuals to make informed decisions and take action to improve and protect the environment
Importance of Environmental Education:
The importance of Environmental education are:
· It is essential for the self-
fulfilment and social development of the child and the adult.
· It is essential for understanding the
different food chains and the natures ecological balance.
· It plays an important role in
understanding and appreciating how the environment is used for making a living
and promoting material culture.
· It enables one to appreciate and
enjoy nature and society.
· It inculcates a concern for the
systematic change of environment for the distant and immediate welfare of
mankind.
· It makes one conscious of the
problems of population explosions, depletion of natural resources, global
warming, etc,
Scope of Environmental Education:
The scope and content of environmental education can be
studied in the terms of four components.
· Awareness.
· Real life situations.
· Conservation.
· Sustainable development.
Awareness:
An effort is made to make the individual conscious about
physical, biological and cultural aspects of environment.
Real Life Situations:
These situations link environment to life. As conditions are
location specific, problems and priorities of each area are different.
Conservation:
This encompasses utilization of natural resources command not
only by present, but also by future generations.
Sustainable development:
This process aims at the sensible utilization of resources
for development. In effect, one should utilize the limited natural resources
wisely and with intelligence.
Regarding the scope of environmental education, the
International Conference on Environmental Education putforth the following
guidelines-
1. Understanding the Whole Environment:
o Consider both natural and built aspects
of the environment. Think about how technology and social factors impact it.
2.
Lifelong Learning:
o Environmental education should start
early (even in preschool) and continue throughout life. It’s for everyone,
whether in formal schools or informal settings.
3.
Holistic Approach:
o Use an interdisciplinary approach—combine
knowledge from different subjects.
4.
Global Perspective:
o Explore environmental issues
from local to international viewpoints.
5.
Focus on Current Challenges:
o While understanding past
environmental issues is crucial, our focus must remain on solving
today’s problems.
6.
Collaboration Across Borders:
o Work together globally to prevent
and solve environmental issues. International cooperation is crucial.
7.
Integration into Development Plans:
o Environmental aspects should be part
of development strategies.
8.
Empower Learners:
o Let students have a say in their
learning experiences. Encourage them to explore real causes of environmental
problems.
9.
Critical Thinking Skills:
o Understand that environmental issues
are complex. Develop problem-solving skills and think critically.
Conclusion:
Thus, in conclusion, environmental
education serves as a powerful catalyst for positive change. By fostering
awareness, knowledge, and responsible actions, it empowers individuals to
become stewards of our planet. As we embrace the interconnectedness of all life
forms and recognize the urgency of environmental challenges, let us commit to
preserving Earth’s beauty and vitality for generations to come.
